Problems and Remedies of Halasuru Lake

This deepest natural lake in Bangalore is plagued by several burning environmental issues like substandard quality of water. This is because the pipes carrying the wastewater release its water into this lake. A lot of initiatives have been taken to give back the lake its past glory and make it as clean as possible. The sewage pipes have been diverted in different directions from the eastern part of the city so that the lake is free of any waterborne pollutants thus helping the lake to stay alive.

This lake has a catchment area of 1.5 km. Apart from the effort mentioned above, other restoration efforts to bring the lake back to its former state include aeration of wastewater brought into the lake, repetitive cleaning of the lake water, construction of slit barriers at storm drain inlets, and bringing back of the aquatic species and plants to the lake once again.

The primary source of inflow of water into the lake is rainwater and city drainage, which is cleared of any kind of pollutants and debris before letting it into the lake. The passage of the water out of the lake is also maintained by keeping the Nala or drain clear of any debris. This is strictly done so that the water doesn’t get polluted again and lose its cleanliness and depth.
