In the 1960s there were around 280 lakes out of which most of them had been converted into bus stands. Currently, Bangalore is blessed with about 189 lakes throughout the city. Each lake is maintained by BDA, BBMP and the forest department. These lakes have become a one-stop destination for yoga enthusiasts, fitness freaks, joggers, runners, couples, families and friends. Not only do people love to breathe in fresh air here but also enjoy spending time in serenity and birdwatching.

However, recently a lot of them have been closed due to construction work, pollution, sewage water, chemicals from industries, and other reasons.

On the contrary, the Karnataka Government has shown urgency in solving the issue, and they have started with the restoration work for the lakes.

When it comes to lakes in Bangalore, the city is a dwelling place. Mostly the lakes here are created in the 16th century. The largest lake in Bangalore is Ulsoor Lake. It dates back to 1537 and is spread over an area of 123.6 acres of land. It contains numerous islands and is great a place for birdwatching, and relaxing and also regarded as a great spot for picnics.

Another largest lake in Bangalore is none other than the very popular "Nagawara Lake". It is one of the most popular spots for those who live in Bangalore as well as for tourists. The lake is also very commonly referred to as the "Lumbini Lake".

This one is located to the north of the city (near Nagawara Village, very close to Hebbal Crossing) and hence a lot of people visit the lake frequently. Hebbal is quite a popular place, so approaching the lake is not so difficult for commuters. .
