Are Fishes Still Dying at Kothanur Lake Bengaluru?

Are Fishes Still Dying at Kothanur Lake Bengaluru?

Kothanur Lake is one of the most famous natural water bodies located in Bangalore. Kothanur Lake's current state is not as glorious as we all think of. In fact, over the years the lake has turned into a dumpster and lost its beauty. Also, the most dangerous part that is affecting the different species of fish present in the lake is the uncontrollable entry of polluted sewage into the water. In the year 2022, there were several reported incidents of dying fish found in the lake. But, the question is if the situation has improved after that or not. Let's find out.

Are Fishes Still Dying at Kothanur Lake Bengaluru?

After the fish dying incident happened last year, this year another tragic incident was found. In April 2023, another incident of fish dying at Kothanur Lake was reported. A local passerby has found 25 dead fish bodies inside the lake.

Eco activists accuse the entry of untreated sewage water as the primary reason for fish dying. UGD chambers of the local households overflowing with dirty waters that are constantly entering into the lake. Along with the Kothanur Lake restoration, the correction of UGD infrastructure is also required. BWSSB is ignoring the situation and is still silent.

This is not the first incident of this year. Earlier in February 2023, the same situation was reported. The situation was reported to Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Bengaluru Water Supply Sewerage Board (BWSSB) over emails and letters by local people and eco-activists. But, no initiatives were taken by government bodies for the Kothanur Lake renovation in Bangalore

In the year 2020, the government proposed Bengaluru Mission 2022 a massive program for lake restoration in Bangalore, which was initiated under BBMP and CM’s Nava Nagarothana scheme and funds were allocated accordingly. But, we are in 2023 now and no proper work has been done to date.

Conclusion

When it comes to the management of Bengaluru lakes, it is quite evident that Kothanur Lake needs improvement. But the situation is worsening each and every day. The polluted condition of the lake is not only a threat to fish but also to the migrant birds that come to the lake. In fact, if the situation is not taken care of on an immediate basis, the hazardous condition will affect human life too. This is high time that people change their habits for good and perform reform programs of their own along with government projects.
