Which Lakes in Bangalore are Highly Polluted?

Bangalore is a renowned city that has the presence of both man-made and natural lakes. All the lakes are vital to the city as they have something to offer to the people. Their breathtaking landscapes ensure lovely views and peaceful surroundings.

By storing water and releasing it whenever there is a shortage, these lakes also help in lessening the impact of floods. Moreover, when locals need a break from the hustle of the city, these lakes provide a much-needed retreat. But not all lakes are as beautiful as they are expected to be. There are many polluted lakes in Bangalore including

Highly Polluted Lakes in Bangalore

  1. Lake Mahadevapura

One of the first Bangalore-polluted lakes on the list is Mahadevapura. It spans an area of 22 acres of land. There is no sewage treatment facility available on the lake's ground.

The lake has only one exit and four inflow sites. Because of the sewage carrying inlets, it causes overflow into the lake in the monsoon. This causes the plastic and trash to become abundant in the lake.

  1. Kundalahalli Lake

Kundalahalli Lake comes next on the list. Three inlets pump toxic sewage materials into this lake. Being spread to an area of 30.5 acres, the lake land has encroached upon without any fencing.

There is a 100-foot mound of construction rubble that is present next to the lake. Moreover, the authorities are doing nothing to remove the structure which is causing the lake to become more polluted.

  1. Horamavu Agara Kere

Horamavu Agara Kere is among the polluted lakes in Bangalore and is spread to an area of 50.34 acres. The lake is used by the locals as a dump yard regardless of the fencing being constructed.

It was earlier a site but now it has become polluted because of the untreated sewage, waste, construction debris and more. The exits of the natural drains are blocked which may cause the lake to disappear soon.

  1. Kaikondrahalli Lake

The next polluted lake in Bangalore is Kaikondrahalli Lake which was once referred to as the most stunning of all. Because of the widespread buildings, the lake has been turned into a swamp.

To administer the lake's affairs, the residents have established an entity and also petitioned the Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike or BBMP.

  1. Bellandur Lake

Last but not least, Bellandur Lake is another one on the list that is also known as a fiery lake. This is because the lake has caught fire in the past more than three times as there are toxic coatings present on the surface.

Being spread to an area of 37,000 acres, the lake is a receptor of three chains of lakes upstream. There is no sign of any water currently in this lake because of the thick layer of foam that formed due to toxic industrial wastes.

There were some of the lakes that were highly polluted in Bangalore. However, if the authorities look into their maintenance, the lakes can be restored once again.
