What is the Current State of Kothanur Lake, Bengaluru?
There are so many lakes located in Bangalore and Kothanur Lake is one of them that is a natural water body. Those who are regular visitors to this lake know that this natural water body is a home of beautiful birds, fishes and many harmless animals. But over the years, the place has lost its glory. This natural water body has become a dumpster. People throw garbage at the lake without considering its harmful effects. Even untreated water enters into the natural aqua of this lake making the scenario even worse. Let's see the current situation of this lake.
What is the Current State of Kothanur Lake, Bengaluru?
Earlier in the year 2022 there were two incidents of fish dying at Kothanur Lake reported in the past years. The lake has become a dumpster. Construction debris is found near the lake, and untreated polluted sewage water enters into the lake which is the major reason for fish being killed. The government had announced several reform programs earlier and funds were allocated to reform the lake under BBMP and CM’s Nava Nagarothana scheme. However, as per the local eco-activists, the condition has not been developed. Two types of problems found as per the latest survey -
Solid Waste from Construction Work and Local Dumpster
Solid wastes are still coming into the Kothanur Lake and making it even more polluted. One of the major sources of it is the local dumpster. People are throwing solid waste into the lake and in its bank. The lake once had a beautiful cycling track and enough space for walkers and joggers. The entire space is now filled with garbage. Also, construction dumpsters keep coming into the lake. These solid wastes are not only a threat to migrant birds but it is also hazardous for human health too.
Polluted Water Entering into the Lake
We all know that Kothanur Lake has two water inlets, amongst which the main inlet is used to collect the rainwater. It's very unfortunate that along with rain water, untreated water and a part of solid garbage enter into the lake. Also, the houses that are constructed surrounding and opposite the lake and the park, constantly discharge polluted water that keeps entering into the lake.
Conclusion
The scenario of Kothnur Lake receiving untreated sewage water increases during the monsoon. BWSSB is not responding properly to the problems and their response is also very slow. The UGD infrastructure problems were reported several times to BWSSB but to no avail.
Kothanur Lake Park is a natural water body in Bangalore which is in a very bad state currently. Like the previous year, this year also there are reported incidents of dying fish found inside the lake. The lake needed immediate maintenance work to restore its lost glory.
