Are BTM Lake and Madiwala Lake the Same?
Bangalore is called the City of Lakes. One of the main reasons for it being called so is the number of lakes and ponds sprinkled all over the city. One of the biggest is the Madiwala lake which is located between NH7 Hosur Road and Bannerghatta Main Road. This lake was built way back by the Cholas in just one day. Madiwala Lake has a flourishing bird habitat and is a very popular picnic spot in the city due to its tranquil locales.
About and History
The Madiwala Lake is located on the 29th main road of the BTM Layout in the southern part of Bangalore in Karnataka. As it is located in the BTM Layout, this is also called BTM Lake. Many people have a big doubt about whether BTM Lake and Madiwala Lake are the same, which is true. The word ‘Madiwala’ means Washerman. This lake was mainly built to be used by the washerman population, around the BTM Lake location and thereby this lake got this name. The water here was so clean that people used to come from long distances to fetch drinking water from this lake. But things changed drastically. A large portion of this lake got covered with weeds. The chemical wastes that were dumped by the neighbouring industrial units and sewage waste from the nearby slums polluted the water immensely. This beautiful lake which was filled with fish at one time got ruined and turned into a sewerage pool. It also became a breeding ground for the mosquitoes due to the stinking and filthy water. The situation worsened in the rainy season when the children around the lake fell sick, the water rose and the smell was unbearable. It was then, that the Karnataka State Forest Department made a decision and restore this lake turning it into crystal clear water again.
Attractions
The beautiful, green and peaceful surroundings make this a peaceful atmosphere makes this lake a must-visit at any time of the day. The lake has a garden with big trees adjacent to it, it is for this reason that this lake is also known as the lake garden. The park provides joggers and local residents a peaceful atmosphere without pollution and traffic sounds along with pleasant sounds of birds which adds delight to the hearts and minds of the visitors. This garden is well maintained. Continuous development ensures it gets better every time. This lake also has an island in the middle with big bamboo trees, thereby attracting a lot of seasonal migratory birds.
