Which is the Cleanest Lake in Bangalore?

Which is the Cleanest Lake in Bangalore?

Three years back, the Indian Institute of Science or IISc, Bangalore declared that only six lakes have maintained the quality standards of the research they have conducted on its water quality. The Jakkur Lake happens to be the cleanest lake in Bangalore. It is so because the lake utilizes an innovative mechanism, which is nothing but a unified wetland that acts as a natural cleanser of its waters.

It is the main lake comprising the Yelahanka Lake upstream and the Rachenahalli Lake downstream. It has been recently rejuvenated by the Bangalore Development Authority or the BDA. It is the Indian Institute of Science or IISc, who is the creator of the integrated wetland for this lake. All the sewage water coming from all over the city falls into this wetland and then goes to the lake, thus purifying the lake water further. Here, we will discuss which is the cleanest lake in Bangalore and why here in this article.

Why It Is So Special?

Apart from being a freshwater lake that acts as the chief source of water for the city, what makes it more special is the fact that it is the perfect model for the Integrated Urban Water Management or IUWM, making it the cleanest lake in Bangalore. It is unique in its own right as it highlights the delicate symbiotic relationship between nature and the human world.

A sewage treatment plant that has a treating capacity of 10 million litres a day has been set up on the northern side of the lake by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board or the BWSSB. Around 12,500 households living in and around Jakkur Lake release their water that passes through this water treatment plant. What makes Jakkur Lake the cleanest lake in Bangalore is the fact that this plant sends around 8 million litres of treated water to the wetland, which in turn purifies it further before releasing it to the lake. This has made Jakkur Lake one of the purest lakes in Bangalore after conquering the immense pressure of pollution and BBMP encroachments from all around.

The End Result

The Jakkur Lake receives a constant flow of water, which has helped it to become the focal point for biodiversity of sorts, which is also the reason why it is considered one of the best lakes in Bangalore. As it is the clearest lake in Bangalore, the local people also get a steady supply of fresh drinking water from the wells that they are using. The lake is part of a fantastic process, and that is the transformation of raw sewage into drinkable water.

The lake also provides livelihood and services to the locals residing around it. Some of the people are into the brick business and they are utilising the water coming from the lake through the borewells. The locals also bathe and wash in the lake.

The most dependent are the fishermen of the area whose livelihood completely depends on the lake. Normally, they catch around 100 kg of fish of various species and during the peak season that catch goes up to 500 kg.
